What Does It Mean To “Think Like A Teacher?”

As small children, according to Howard Gardner, we form powerful theories about how the world works (Gardner, 1995, p. 2). When, as an infant, you come to terms with the fact that your mother leaves the room, and then you work your way toward a theory that allows for her continued existence and for her eventual return to the room, you’re going to rely on that theory. You will formulate it out of your lived experience, then test and re-test it. It will be activated and reinforced every time your mother leaves a room, then later returns. Not only are you going to remember this theory, you’re going to operate by it. Constructed over time, vetted through testing and re-testing, it is self-authored and put into practice. It is powerful; it is authentic learning. This applies to all sorts of phenomena—why it gets dark at night, why flowers bloom in the spring, why you love to read and hate the dark. Our young minds are hard at work through those early years.

The fact that we already have deeply embedded theories about how the world works is, Gardner argues, one of several reasons that academic learning in schools tends toward the superficial. We don’t just “believe” our theories. We invented them; we live by them. Formed out of experience and honed through repeated testing, they aren’t on the table for critique. That’s why, according to Gardner, “even students who have been well trained and who exhibit all the overt signs of success—faithful attendance at good schools, high grades and high test scores, accolades from their teachers—typically do not display an adequate understanding of the materials and concepts with which they have been working (p. 3). He cites several familiar, disconcerting examples:

College students were asked to indicate the forces acting on a coin that has been tossed straight up in the air and has reached the midway point of its upward trajectory. The correct answer is that once the coin is airborne, only gravitational pull toward the earth is present. Yet 70 percent of college students who had completed a course in mechanics [emphasis added] gave the same naïve answer as untrained students: they cited two forces, a downward one representing gravity and an upward one from “the original force of the upward hand.”

When questioned about the phases of the moon, the reasons for the seasons, the trajectories of objects hurtling through space, or the motions of their own bodies, students fail to evince the understandings that science teaching is supposed to produce. Indeed in dozens of studies of this sort, young adults trained in science continue to exhibit the very same misconceptions and misunderstandings that one encounters in primary school children. (p. 3-4)

Our intuitive theories can be interrupted, Gardner argues, when we think disciplinarily. We change for example, not when we study grammar but when we think like writers; not when we read a textbook, or fill out a worksheet, or memorize a list of facts from history but when we think like historians. He says, “performances of disciplinary (or genuine) understanding…occur when students are able to take information and skills they have learned in school or other settings and apply them flexibly and appropriately in a new and at least somewhat unanticipated situation” (p. 9). This presents a delightfully rich challenge to the classroom teacher on every level. It clarifies and reinforces the imperative toward invoking prior knowledge in any lesson or unit in the curriculum, and the importance of what we are calling project-based learning. Thus, when we ask a youngster to “think like a scientist” as she engages in an experiment in gravitational pull, it is imperative that we first invoke her prior knowledge–her compelling, intuitive theory about how gravity works. We must ensure that it is present so that it can be interrupted.

Then we provide the counterpoint to that–a lesson that invites her to “think like a scientist.” This is nicely congruent with the project-based model of curriculum development, the hallmarks of which are inquiry, student agency and connection to the world beyond school. While the power of this contemporary model is being explored, articulated and developed, it is important for us to remember that it is quite counter-cultural to our ingrained model. One approach to maintaining a project-based learning (PBL) mindset as we work against our ingrained, traditional habits of mind, is to continually ask how practitioners in the world are applying the concepts we introduce in classrooms.

A disciplinary mindset is invoked when the humanities teachers at my school run a writing workshop—because that’s what writers do; when math students think like programmers, applying principles of mathematics as they create video games; when physics students think like engineers applying basic principles of physics as they build a car. When our school’s learning specialist asked to see the car-builders’ physics notes, they claimed they had not taken notes, but when she asked them to explain the physics, they were happy to explain and elaborate (and strikingly adept at it).

As we design engaging activities to enable students to go deep, to engage with course content in authentic and meaningful ways, and to think about the ways in which their understandings transfer to situations in the world beyond the classroom, we should ask how would a writer/historian/scientist approach this task? What does it mean to think like a writer? Like a scientist? Like an historian? Even more wonderfully challenging: What does it mean to ask a first grader or a third grader or a tenth grader to “think like an historian,” or a scientist or a writer?

 

Teaching is a cultural activity

There is a related, perhaps more profound, challenge facing teachers, and the teachers of teachers. In their 1999 book, The Teaching Gap, Stigler and Hiebert reported on their work in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study, known as the TIMMS Study. Their comparative study of eighth grade mathematics classrooms in Germany, Japan and the USA revealed differences in classroom practice from the use of bell time, worksheets, and questions, to the ways in which students greeted teachers, interacted with each other, and approached the challenge of a new problem.

One of their conclusions is that teaching is a cultural activity—so much so that the most conservative teacher in the United States looks more like the most progressive teacher in the United States than like a teacher in either Germany or Japan. Anticipating that “there would be great variability in teaching methods within the United States” (p. 11), they reported instead “as we looked again and again at the tapes we collected, we were struck by the homogeneity of teaching methods within each culture, compared with the marked differences in methods across cultures” (p. x). While there are certainly marked differences in teaching styles and philosophies among and between American teachers, Stigler and Hiebert discovered that “these differences, which appear so large within our culture, are dwarfed by the gap in general methods of teaching that exist across cultures” (Stigler and Hiebert, p. x).

What does this mean, that teaching is a cultural activity? It means, according to Stigler and Hiebert that “we learn to teach indirectly, through years of participation in classroom life, and we are largely unaware of some of the widespread attributes of teaching in our own culture” (p. 11). It means that the toddler in Gardner’s model, who observes the world and forms powerful theories about where parents go when they leave the room and why it gets dark at night, will continue to engage in that activity several years later, as she sits in a classroom, observing behaviors of teachers and students, including herself. She will, again, form powerful models of what it means to inhabit this world—in this case, the world of “school.”

Notions like homework, tests, and report cards, are part of that model. Appropriate behavior; what is “academic and what is not; what constitutes “important” or legitimate subject matter and what does not; how we define mastery and how that is demonstrated (even the very use of the term “mastery”)—all of these are formed, as in Gardner’s model, personally, through observation and analysis, through repetition and application. Notions about school and schooling are constructed in the deepest sense. They are not what we “believe.” They are what we know and come to understand intuitively—“in our bones.”

What does this mean for teacher education and school reform? It means that much like the learning that too often occurs in K-12 classrooms, teacher education programs and programs of professional development are relegated to the superficial. Stigler and Hiebert are quite direct about it: “the fact that teaching is a cultural activity explains why teaching has been so resistant to change” (p. 12). In the same way that students’ deeply-held, intuitive theories must be invoked so they might be interrupted, so, too, must we extract our deeply held understandings of school and teaching not only so that we might examine them critically, but so that we might reinvent them.

According to Stigler and Hiebert, “the cultural nature of teaching gives us new insights into what we need to do if we wish to improve it” (p. 12). Their recognition of the deep power of culture allows us recognize and frame the larger structures we are trying to address systemically, and provides a lens through which to reflect on many of the smaller cogs in the machinery—the tropes and mindsets that we act on from deep habit with roots in a system that took form long before any of us ever set foot in a department of education, or sat in a classroom desk. It allows us to find clarity in contemporary learning practices as we move away from the ingrained habits of disciplinary specialists doling out content, designing lesson plans in isolation and closing the door when class starts, to a collaborative model in which we work in teams to design contexts in which students discover and apply knowledge, skills, and understandings. This is where we begin to understand what it means to “think like a teacher.”

The role of the disciplines in the new teaching paradigm

In the traditional factory model of education we are working against, school, teaching, and learning were all based on the core disciplines. Ken Kay of EdLeader21 (2014) frames the shift in terms of Student A, whose schedule and education are built around the study of math, science, English and social studies (“the way most of us were educated”) as opposed to Student B whose education is constructed around 21st century skills. For Kay, these include the “four C’s” of critical thinking, effective communication, creativity and innovation, and effective collaboration as well as self-direction, global competence, financial literary, and content mastery. The Deeper Learning network values the fours C’s plus academic mindsets, self-directed learning, and mastery of core academic content. For both organizations, content mastery is still deeply relevant—it is not the entire curriculum, or even necessarily the singular core of the curriculum. It is, rather, the context for skill building around the 4 C’s and reflective learning.

The core academic disciplines were the organizational structure of school in the factory model of education. Information in the form of disciplinary content filled the various “classes,” and “courses of study” which were organized by “departments” which, in turn, housed the disciplines. As we re-think and re-create the very idea of school, we are rethinking not simply our reification of information but how, where, and why it is encountered. As we restructure our institutions around new priorities–not “math,” or “language arts,” or “science,” but around critical and creative problem solving, innovation and global competence, etc., we must be deliberate about how we resituate the disciplines.

Rather than loading kids’ minds up with content-area content, if we reframe the effort as an invitation to learn how writers, historians, scientists, etc., think, and ask our students to use those lenses within, across, and between disciplines as they solve problems, communicate questions and insights, innovate and create, the question, “what does it mean to think like a ________?” shifts classroom inquiry to a broader, more critical and inquiry-based mode, and by definition moves us to consistently look for the connection to the world beyond the walls of the classroom. It is beyond those walls that we find writers, historians, scientists, all those working across and between disciplines, and all those connecting the disciplines to create new knowledge, new disciplines, and the limitless threads of connection.

 

The essential question

“The mind of the five-year old persists in most of us, in most of our daily activities, with only the disciplinary expert escaping fully from its powerful clutches in certain areas of expertise” (Gardner, 1995, p. 111)

What does it mean to “think like a teacher?”

Is education a discipline? Or is it a “meta-discipline,” the core concern of which is to worry about teaching the other disciplines? A complex array of questions unfolds: Indeed, what does it mean to think “disciplinarily?” What does it mean to think like a scientist? To what extent does that differ from what has been going on in science (or history, or English) classrooms for the past century?

Traditional transmission-mode classrooms are not centered on formulating and articulating questions. But professionals in the field—in any field—engage in research. And research is always in response to questions. That is, in fact, what keeps work focused, what allows us to make sense of it. So how do you “think like a scientist?” Is it as simple as asking scientific questions and applying the scientific method of observation, hypothesis, and testing?

If Gardner is correct that the way to change a youngster’s understanding of the world is to find ways to compel him to “think like a scientist,” then it follows that the teacher’s question is, “how do I get a nine-year-old (or a 12-year old, or a 15-year old) to think like a scientist?” If thinking like a scientist means posing research questions, then attempting to answer those questions though experimentation, does it not follow that “teaching” science means helping youngsters to pose, refine, and frame appropriate research questions, followed by the construction of appropriate means of exploration and experimentation? Simply put, professionals who are engaged in research in any field invariably begin by asking questions.

In this reflexive model, the question, “what does it mean to think like a teacher?” leads us immediately to consider what it means to ask students to think disciplinarily. “What does it mean to think like a scientist or a writer?” is accompanied by questions about cognition and brain research and how learning happens, about what is socially, emotionally, and developmentally appropriate. These are the research questions that teachers ask. The complexity of the question-within-a-question, along with concerns with methodology and child development, elements of teaching not rooted to a specific discipline, make teaching one of the most intellectually complex, challenging, and engaging of professions.

Jo Boaler (2008), in What’s Math Got to Do With It, claims that “school math is widely hated, but the mathematics of life, work, and leisure is intriguing and much more enjoyable.” There are, she says, two versions of math in the lives of many Americans: the strange and boring subject that they encountered in classrooms and an interesting set of ideas that is the math of the world, and is curiously different and surprisingly engaging.

Boaler uses the terms “mathematical thinking” to describe what she wants teachers to ask of youngsters. She says, “children need to solve complex problems, to ask many forms of questions, and to use, adapt, and apply standard methods as well as to make connections between methods and to reason mathematically” (p. 12). She describes a process of teaching youngsters not only to ask questions, but of teaching them “the qualities of a good mathematics question” (p. 154). Students’ good questions were posted around the room. Students were invited to extend problems by “posing their own questions.”

Boaler and her graduate students encouraged “mathematical reasoning. Students learn to reason through being asked, for example, to justify their mathematical claims, explain why something makes sense, or defend their answers and methods to mathematical skeptics” (p. 154). Additionally, students articulate their understandings through “representations” that might include graphs, charts, diagrams, etc. They engage in many activities that involve the flexible use, interpretation and adaptation of mathematics and mathematical thinking.

The inquiry-based, authentic approach that Boaler is developing and advocating stands in opposition to classroom practices that she and Stigler and Hiebert bemoan: “The traditional K-12 mathematics curriculum with its focus on performing computational manipulations, [which] is unlikely to prepare students for the problem-solving demands of the high-tech workplace” (p. 8).

In humanities classrooms, the question “what does it mean to think like a writer” leads to authentic inquiry in writing workshops, as students ask questions of their peers: what works in this piece, and how can I make it stronger? In genuine, collaborative inquiry, they hone their writing skills. My colleague, Dana Huff, observes, “if we write professionally, we expect to have an editor. No one says we don’t really know how to write on our own if someone edits our work. No one says we’re cheating. Yet, with students, I have heard teachers argue that students need to write in isolation.”

Once teachers begin thinking this way, PBL becomes second nature, and inquiry, student agency and application to the world beyond the classroom become deeply rooted in meaningful curriculum created by teams of teachers engaging in their own meaningful work.

Conclusion

Culture is intractable. It runs deep, is largely subconscious (Jung referred to it as the “collective unconscious.” Freud referred to “archaic remnants.”) and thus, to claim that it is resistant to change is profound understatement.

This cultural moment, this paradigm shift we are experiencing in education, is a confluence of evolving factors, including constructivism, brain research, inquiry-based education, and the ubiquity of knowledge in the digital age. All of that is for naught if we cannot interrupt the cultural stranglehold of our habits and mindsets.   The correlation of Gardner’s theory with Stigler and Heibert’s findings leads us to profound insight into the necessity of invoking prior knowledge and understandings as we continue to learn how to teach and learn in this new paradigm.

One of the principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools is that “The principal and teachers should perceive themselves as generalists first and specialists second” (Coalition of Essential Schools). As teachers, we are both students of how children learn, and passionate specialists in one or more disciplines. Those disciplines might be traditional or emerging, singular or cross- or trans-disciplinary, but they constitute the context from which we engage our students in the real work of the world beyond the walls of the school, to discover the pleasures to be found in looking at a problem through various lenses—the lens of the scientist, the venture capitalist, the journalist, the social scientist.

As generalists first, we are, as Sizer noted, engaged in the process of teaching kids to “use their minds well.” This does not preclude being thoroughly versed in one or more subject areas, even in imagining—in partnership with our students—new and trans-disciplinary subject areas. We too, have an imperative to “use our minds well.” As we fearlessly invoke our own prior knowledge and deeply held understandings in order to challenge and disrupt them, we ask ourselves fundamental questions—What is school, homework, rigor? Why do they matter? Do they matter? —we are reinventing schools and reinventing ourselves. We are thinking like teachers.

Two years ago, after 22 years of teaching mostly working-class students at Youngstown State University, I moved to Georgetown University, where most of my students come from very privileged backgrounds. Many people have asked about the differences between the two groups of students. Most seem to assume that students at Georgetown are significantly better – and more satisfying to teach – than those at YSU. As with anything, though, it’s complicated.

In some ways, teaching at Georgetown is easier than it was at Youngstown. But that’s not because the students are smarter or more capable. It’s all about privilege. Although about 12% of Georgetown students come from working-class and poverty-class backgrounds, more than 40% come from families that can afford around $50,000 a year in tuition and board. At YSU, tuition is less than $8000 a year and 96% of students receive financial aid. Most also work to help pay…

The day after New York City told the world that it was okay for a man of the law to choke to death a citizen he was supposed to protect and serve, I sat across from my colleagues at lunch stoic and silent. The British teachers teased me (as usual) about not properly making tea. The Canadian teacher, who had asked me earlier with the sincerest confusion how could an officer kill an innocent man ON TAPE and not lose his badge, looked knowingly at me when I ignored the Brits’ jabs. The other American teacher knew why my talkative, silly disposition had drastically changed. She was white. An ally in this centuries old war to dismantle white supremacy, she knew the color of her skin dictated she proceed with caution.

Charlie Cannon: Board of Visitor Keynote

Arts & Innovation

These remarks, delivered on November 7, 2014, to Board of Visitors at our annual event, followed Charlie Cannon’s keynote address, and introduced the activity that would follow:

As Charlie has demonstrated, we are in the midst of such unprecedented change that “innovation” is almost understatement.

There is a new world emerging from under our feet—whether we like it or not–and we can be subject to that change, bear witness to it, or be actively engaged in shaping it.

If we want to be active participants, we must be collectively and collaboratively engaged in the critical and creative act of reimagining old systems. As Maxine Greene, one of my all-time favorite educators put it, the arts give us a lens, “to defamiliarize what has become familiar.”

Charlie has told us about this and has demonstrated redefining the world around us, re-appropriating language, creating a noun (a creative) from an adjective. Redefining:

“Studio” as a frame of mind, a practice, a process, a community, a space.

It’s about how you see the world…

How you interact with the world…

How you create the world.

“The arts can awaken us to alternative possibilities of existing, of being human, of relating to others, of being other” (Greene). That is why it is essential that they are central to the curriculum.

The disciplines matter—they are “cumulative modes of sense-making” (Greene). They provide us with familiar tools, but creatively applied to real-world questions and problems in the studio that is the world around us, we see them with fresh eyes. They become relevant; they become alive.

It is a particular challenge for adults to de-familiarize the familiar. The trenches of our habits and understandings run deep. Students live closer to possibility. They are the ones who will shape this unfolding and unprecedented world—and we who work in schools that care enough to educate them by re-imagining and reinventing the unfolding world with them are among the most fortunate of 21st century dwellers.

We are charging you now with a research mission—should you choose to accept it. You will find your charge on a piece of paper in your folder. You are each assigned to a group; each group is asked to find evidence in action,  here at Worcester Academy, of one of the 4c’s of communication, collaboration, critical thinking or creativity. You have an itinerary to help you find classes, activities and personnel who are waiting to welcome you as you engage in your research project.

A Culture of Inquiry, Reflective Practice & Deeper Learning.

Here at WA, we ask students—even middlers–to be in ongoing dialogue with each other and with their teachers about their learning. Here, too, the teachers are in ongoing dialogue with each other and with their administrators, the deans, the counselors. We are all here for one reason: to support student learning and growth –and to help them become the leaders of their own learning. We believe deeply and passionately in a growth mindset:

In a fixed mindset students believe their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talents, are just fixed traits. They have a certain amount and that’s that, and then their goal becomes to look smart all the time and never look dumb.

In a growth mindset students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence. They don’t necessarily think everyone’s the same or anyone can be Einstein, but they believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it. (Dweck)

So you will see me, Mike (the Middle School Director), new faculty, veteran faculty, all coming in and out of classrooms to observe the learning (and participate in the learning) so we can remain in dialogue with each other around how kids learn best and how we can all continue to learn.

Remarks to Upper School 9-22-2014

Good morning. I am….  Some of you have seen me in your classrooms–if you’re not new, you may have seen me in your classes last year; any number of you may have noticed me in your classes this year.

As Dean of Faculty, I work with the teachers here to continually reflect on and improve our curriculum. To that end, this year, as you know, we have changed a few things. A couple of them are pretty significant things: We have changed time in terms of the schedule–and space. The new Walker classrooms are designed for more interactive, collaborative and flexible learning. My Hilltop, you might say, is a change to our virtual meeting spaces.

Two weeks into the year, you’re probably getting used to these changes. We have

Longer periods:

Schools have a long tradition of holding 40-50 minute classes. That’s because that is the perfect amount of time if the point if education is to transmit information. It’s just long enough to say hello, take attendance, check and collect homework, deliver the next lesson, and assign the next round of homework. Why did we make them longer?

To allow each of you to go deeper in your activities in classes. More time allows for some of the most essential elements of learning to take place–active listening, dialogue, practice and application. In the new schedule, there is more time for questioning, discussion, seminars, getting feedback on your work—and practicing giving others feedback on their work. You have opportunities to apply new concepts while your teacher is there to answer questions, engage in discussion, and often to learn with you–for when we are grappling with genuine questions, we are all learners.

And the cooperative/collaborative learning period is new.

Cooperative/Collaborative Learning Period:

Those of you who are not new are used to a period we used to call “extra help.” In this new model, if you need “extra help” you can get it during the collaborative/cooperative learning period. But let’s analyze that phrase—“extra help”— for a minute. Both words imply that you need to be “fixed.” The term implies that there are those who “got it” right away, and then there are those who need “help.” Even worse, you don’t just need help, you need “extra” help. But somehow enough of us needed extra help that we held it for the whole school four times each week!   That’s because it’s not really extra or help. It’s just learning. Learning is a process. It’s messy, and it looks different for every person. And it is much more complex than showing up once to be taught, and if that didn’t work or wasn’t enough, showing up an “extra” time for the teacher to fix you.

Learning requires brain-play.

Sometimes you have a question for the teacher. Sometimes you just need to talk it through again or think it through for yourself—getting confirmation from your peers or from your teacher.

Sometimes you can work with your peers, or do some research.

There are many ways you can answer your questions, deepen your learning, and extend your knowledge.

Extra help (and it’s even more dire companion “mandatory extra help“) implies that there was one way. That you go to your teacher for “help.”   Sometimes we do need to be rescued, but often we can help ourselves. That what the cooperative/collaborative period is for–for you to be in charge of your own learning. You know—usually better than anyone else–what you need. Sometimes you need a boost –so when something is radically new or particularly difficult, you might seek extra help. You may reach a point where you are asked to get mandatory extra help from your teacher. In those cases you should set up an appointment with your teacher. That can happen during CCP. But most of the time, no one knows better than you what you need.

Why I keep popping into your classrooms.

As the Dean of Faculty, I collaborate with our teachers to continually develop curriculum. Teaching is really only a more sophisticated form of learning, and both teaching and learning are processes. We are, as individuals and as a group, continually getting better at both. Here at WA, we ask you to be in ongoing dialogue with each other and with your teachers, and the teachers are in ongoing dialogue with each other and with their administrators, the deans, the counselors. We are all here for one reason: to support teachers and students in their teaching and learning. So you will see me, Mrs. Peterleitner, new faculty, veteran faculty, all coming in and out of classrooms to observe the learning so we can remain in dialogue with each other around how kids learn best and how we can all continue to learn.

And of course, we are eager always to remain in dialogue with you about what is working and what is not. I’m on the 2nd floor of Walker, and I’d love to hear your thoughts, your feedback, and your ideas.   We are a school—teaching and learning is our whole identity and reason to exist. So we should all be engaged in dialogue–with our peers, with our friends, with our mentors–about how people learn.

Regarding e-texts

Memo to the teaching faculty regarding the WA position on e-books, (as proposed by the curriculum committee last spring)

I do not disagree with any of the bemoaning of the passage of the era of beautiful, tangible, smells-like-paper, filled-with-another’s-annotations texts. Traditional “hard-copy” paper texts have, and will continue to have, advantages. There’s a kind of serendipity in finding one in a library or bookstore, or on the shelf at a friend’s house or in the beach house where you’re vacationing. I personally have moved back from the Kindle to paper for a large portion of my reading because I miss the geography of the book. When I want to retrieve a passage, I, like many of us, have a pretty keen sense of whether it was an eighth of the way through the book, or halfway, or three quarters. I have a visual memory of whether it was on the right or left side and where it was on the page. I also miss the sense of how “big” a book is, the heft of it, and the always-immediate visual sense of how far along I am. The percentage statistic at the bottom of my Kindle does not give me the same sense or the same satisfaction.

And yes—there are advantages to taking notes by hand, to learning cursive, to writing things out rather than taking notes on the computer; and yes, there are issues of distractibility with e-texts and their connectedness to the internet. It is important to disconnect in order to focus and go deep, and that can be a challenge to all of us in this new paradigm.

None of this means that electronic texts do not have a compelling set of advantages. Whether those advantages are equally compelling is an open question. And perhaps a bit of a moot question, as none of this means that the world is going to stop evolving and that our habits will stop changing. Remember—Socrates refused to write anything down because he believed that it would weaken our ability to remember things if we could write them down and file them away for later retrieval. He was absolutely correct in his analysis, but the world changed anyway. And then the printing press was invented, and then we fetishized books and written textual knowledge to the exclusion of direct experience. It was even worse than he thought.   But the world kept evolving in that direction anyway.

We cannot discount the many calls we have received from parents over the last three summers asking about our policy regarding electronic texts. It was clear three summers ago when I arrived that we needed to be able to respond to that reasonable question—we needed a policy. Until this past year, we asked the departments to set policy, and most departments decided that it was a matter of teacher choice. Teacher choice must be designated in the MBS system. That choice is, in many cases, not clear to users. As these choices become more complex, we have to provide more guidance to students and parents. It is incumbent upon us to provide clarity. Every book we list as required must be clearly marked as to whether the e-text version is an option.

And, it is incumbent upon us not only to support and promote teacher agency, it is also essential that we promote student agency. We cannot continue to demand printed texts as the default for all students simply because it is our comfort level. In other words, what we are asking is that if we don’t have a pedagogical reason to ask that they all purchase a hard copy, let them buy according to their preference rather than ours.

What would constitute a pedagogical reason? Anything from the sublime to the mundane: perhaps the edition you need is not available in e-text; perhaps you will be using graphics that do not translate well in the platform in which it is available; perhaps you want to teach them close reading skills and you need everyone to have a hard copy in front of them and a pen in their hand. (Perhaps the next lesson is the same exercise in electronic form so you and your students can explore and discuss the benefits and limitations of both.)

Clarity and consistency is important, as is teacher agency, as is student agency. Last year the curriculum committee struggled with this question over the course of several meetings. We decided that the institutional policy that does not take away teachers’ agency is to ask that those teachers whose preference is always for paper texts reflect on the reasons for that preference. If there is no reason beyond teacher preference or our own comfort level to require that kids buy paper, we can let them choose according to their comfort level. It is not a mandate; it is a request to engage in reflective practice. If some teachers are not ready, we understand. Our collective reflection will benefit all of us. Our clarity and consistency in the ways we communicate options to kids and families will be greatly appreciated.
